The role of
the H.S.E
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is a Government organisation which develops the
health and safety laws, codes and standards which cover safe working procedures right
across industry. They also publish advice and guidance, carry out research and contribute
to international developments in health and safety, especially within the European Union.
Why are they involved with gas safety in the home?
In the case of gas safety in the home, HSE enforces the Gas Safety (Installation and
Use) Regulations 1998, and has statutory powers to ensure that gas appliances/flues in
rented properties are checked for safety and maintained by a competent person, i.e. a CORGI registered installer. Not only are the
regulations concerned with gas appliances in rented properties, they are also concerned
with the safe installation, use and maintenance of all domestic gas appliances and flues.
In addition these regulations outline other important aspects of gas safety. They include
ensuring that only competent persons carry out work on gas appliances and prohibit the use
of gas appliances which you know or suspect to be unsafe. They also prohibit the
installation of instantaneous water heaters which are not room sealed or fitted with a
safety device which automatically turns the gas supply off before a dangerous level of
poisonous fumes build up.
How they help you?
HSE are striving to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide. Every year an
average of 30 people die as a result of CO poisoning from domestic gas appliances. HSE
believes that even one person losing their life is one too many. Their aim is to ensure
that the 'silent killer' causes no more tragic deaths - now or in the
future. |
